MGP Leads National Workshop

MGP co-led a 2012 National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA)
conference workshop highlighting our language-variation professional
development (PD) with teachers here in Baltimore.

Last year, we received NPEA’s inaugural Award for Excellence in
Collaboration, which included a high-profile spot leading a workshop at
this year’s conference. MGP Executive Director Beth Casey and three
colleagues presented “Valuing African American Language and Culture in
The Middle School Years.” Conference workshop co-leaders included Dr.
Christine Mallinson (UMBC) and Dr. Anne H. Charity Hudley (The College
of William & Mary)—co-developers with MGP for last summer’s PD. That
PD explored the relationships between language, schools, and
communities. The goal was to help teachers apply knowledge about
language to help students succeed in the classroom.

Inte’a DeShields (doctoral student in Language, Literacy, and Culture at
UMBC) was an additional co-leader of the NPEA conference workshop,
which:

Outlined MGP’s model for partnership as one that can broaden and deepen the impact and meaning of teacher PD.

Brought together linguists and educators to better understand the role of language in a middle school setting.

Presented findings from teachers who participated in the 2011 MGP PD and then integrated what they learned into their teaching.

MGP Gears up for Summer 2012

"The classroom can be magical if students feel a sense of belonging.”

That’s how one Middle Grades Partnership director sums up her program
goals for the summer, when more than 400 Baltimore City middle school
students will experience MGP’s magic. They’ll tackle challenging
courses in reading, writing, math, science and foreign languages—in an engaging, hands-on environment.

We’re excited to have 17 schools
working together in 8 public-private school partnerships. A talented
teacher corps will engage students in activities so stimulating that
kids may forget they're learning! Our five-week summer learning program
works hard for kids. Many MGP students are less likely to fall behind
because of summer learning loss. And more and more of our graduates are
attending the city's most selective public high schools.

Help MGP gear up for our 8th year of providing students with a magical, memorable summer—and an opportunity to realize their dreams. Invest in our kids today. Help ensure a brighter tomorrow for Baltimore.
